Con quanto segue sono qui per presentare cosa significano per me “Passione, Amore e Dedizione” per le piante e i fiori di Camelia e Magnolia.
Queste piante hanno orientato in modo significativo la mia vita sin da quando ero giovane, e molto di più ora che sono in pensione.
Ho iniziato questo progetto nel 1975, e nel tempo ha portato alla creazione di un giardino di 15.000 mq.
La passione, il lavoro e la dedizione di mia moglie Gemma sono stati fondamentali nella realizzazione di questo giardino.
Abbiamo acquistato la nostra prima Magnolia in assoluto nel 1975, una “soulangeana Alexandrina” che, ancora oggi, cresce grande e rigogliosa nel nostro giardino.
La nostra tenuta è situata a circa 25 km dalla città di Lucca, su terreni collinari, appena a ridosso delle cime delle Apuane, e disposta su terrazzamenti naturali a 300/400 metri sul livello del mare posizionati a sud.
Siamo entrati nel mondo della Camelia nel 1980 quando abbiamo acquistato il nostro primo “Fred Sander”, innamorandoci perdutamente di questo meraviglioso fiore. Fu in quel momento che iniziò il progetto di realizzare il nostro giardino.
Negli anni ’80 abbiamo visitato tutti i vivai del Pistoiese, acquistando Cultivar in zolle per piantarle direttamente nel terreno.
Negli anni ’90, grazie a diverse visite sul Lago Maggiore, ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare persone di passione, conoscenza e prestigio, come Giovanni Piffaretti, Piero Hillebrand, Otto Eisenhut e Ornella Carmine.
Sono molto grato a questi uomini per aver riprodotto piante endemiche del lago e aver importato direttamente le varietà più antiche dal Belgio, dalla Francia e dalla Germania. Li ringrazio anche per i loro preziosi consigli senza i quali non sarei stato in grado di creare con successo ciò che è stato realizzato oggi. Stavano anche importando la nuova cultivar dall’America, e ho potuto ampliare la nostra collezione.
Fondamentale è stato conoscere Otto Eisenhut e il dott. Micheli Pierluigi i quali mi hanno suggerito la piantumazione di Magnolie caducifoglie per creare un’ombreggiatura naturale durante l’estate.
Attualmente nella nostra tenuta sono presenti un centinaio di Magnolie: soulangeana e suoi ibridi, sargentiana e Campbell, Pickard’s, sprengeri e specie spontanee come la macrophylla hypoleuca obovata, le biloba ufficinalis e alcune Cultivar di Magnolia fico.
Nel 2002 ho stretto amicizia con Edoardo de la Rubia, segretario della The Spanish Camellia Society, e grazie a lui e alla sua preziosa amicizia sono riuscito ad ottenere 11 Cultivar di Camelia, allora introvabili in Italia, come per esempio: Augusto Leal de Gouvenia Pinto, Don Ersilia Fraises de Mgalles, Maria Soprezioan Loriero, e tante altre.
Nel 2015 durante l’annuale mostra “Antiche Camelie della Lucchesia”, che si svolge nel Compitese, alla quale partecipo da molti anni come espositore, ho conosciuto il Dott.Andrea Corneo, Presidente della Società Italiana delle Camelie. Grazie a lui entrai a far parte della Società, partecipando al Convegno Internazionale delle Società della Camelia, che si tenne in Cina l’anno successivo, a Dali City nella prefettura dello Yunnan. Durante questa convention ho acquistato 22 specie di Cultivar e ibridi di Camellia reticulata.
In quell’occasione ho avuto l’opportunità di conoscere il Professor Gianmario Motta, un’eccellenza tra le Società Camellia nel mondo.
Nel 2017, insieme al Dr. Corneo, sono andato in Portogallo e Spagna.
In Portogallo abbiamo visitato Il Giardino Botanico di Porto, con la sua magnifica e sorprendente vecchia Cultivar Portoghese, Il Giardino di Villa Quinta de Curvos vicino a Viano do Castelo, e Il Vivaio di Antonio Assuncao.
In Spagna abbiamo visitato il Giardino di Eusebio Lopez Redondo vicino a Fene, la mostra della Camelia a Ponte Vedra e il parco accanto al Pazo de Rubianes Pontevedra.
Nel 2018 ho visitato la mostra Camellia a Naron (Spagna), e lì, tutti i giardini privati, messi a disposizione del pubblico per l’occasione.
Nel 2019, insieme al Dr. Corneo, sono tornato in Portogallo per l’Esposizione Internazionale della Camelia a Porto, e poi abbiamo continuato a visitare i Giardini di Villa D’Allen.
Ad oggi la tenuta e il giardino della mia famiglia conta più di 900 piante di Cultivar di Camelia japonica, dalla vecchia Camelia lucchese, eccellenza toscana, al Cultivar del Lago Maggiore e Cultivar di Francia, Spagna, Portogallo e Belgio.
Nel nostro giardino contiamo anche:
50 Camelie (reticolate e ibride), 42 Camellia Higo e altre 20 specie di Camelia.

With the following I am here to present what “Passion, Love and Dedication” to the Camellia and Magnolia plants and flowers, mean to me.
These plants have significantly directed my life since I was young, and so much more now that I’m retired.
I’ve started this project in 1975, and over time it led to the creation of a 15.000 square metre garden.
The passion, the work and dedication of my wife Gemma were essential in the realization of this garden.
We bought our first ever Magnolia in 1975, a “soulangeana Alexandrina” which, to this day, grows big and luxuriant in our garden.
Our estate is situated about 25 km away from the city of Lucca, on hilly lands, just behind the Apuenian peaks, and arranged on natural terraces at 300/400 meters above sea level positioned south.
We entered the world of Camellia’s in 1980 when we bought our first “Fred Sander”, falling hopelessly in love with this wonderful flower. It was in that moment that our project for the garden began.
In the 80s we visited all the nurseries around the Pistoia area, buying speciments in rootball in order to plant them directly into our garden.
In the 90s, thanks to several visits to Lake Maggiore, I was lucky enough to meet people with passion, knowledge and prestige, such as Giovanni Piffaretti, Piero Hillebrand, Otto Eisenhut and Ornella Carmine.
I am so grateful to these men for reproducing endemic plants of the lake and directly importing the oldest varieties from Belgium, France and Germany. They were also importing new Cultivars from America, and I was able to enlarge our collection. I also thank them for their valuable pieces of advice without which I wouldn’t have been able to successfully create what has been achieved today.
Knowing Otto Eisenhut and Pierluigi Micheli was essential, they suggested the planting of deciduous Magnolias to create natural shade during the hot summer months.
Currently on our estate are present about a hundred Magnolias: Soulangeana and its hybrids, Sargentiana, Campbell’s, Pickard’s, Sprengeri and natural species such as the Macrophylla hypoleuca obovata, the Biloba officinalis, and some Cultivar of the Magnolia figo.
In 2002 I made friends with Edoardo de la Rubia, secretary of The Spanish Camellia Society, and thanks to him and his valuable friendship, I managed to obtain 11 Cultivar of Camellia, not present in Italy at that time. These include: Augusto Leal de Gouvenia Pinto, Don Ersilia Fraises de Mgalles, Maria Soprezioan Loriero, and many more.
In 2015 during the annual exhibition “Antiche Camelie della Lucchesia”, that takes place in the Compitese area, whilst participating as an exhibitor for many years, I met Dr.Andrea Corneo, the President of The Italian Camellia Society. Thanks to him I joined the Society, taking part in the International Convention of the Camellia Society, which took place in Dali City, China, in the prefecture of Yunnan, the following year. During this convention I purchased 22 species of Cultivar and hybrids of Camellia reticulata. On this occasion I had the opportunity to meet Professor Gianmario Motta, an excellency within the Camellia Society around the world.
In 2017, together with Dr. Corneo, I went to Portugal and Spain. In Portugal we visited The Botanical Garden of Porto, with its magnificent and astonishing old Portuguese Cultivar, The Garden of Villa Quinta de Curvos near Viano do Castelo, and The Nursery of Antonio Assuncao.
In Spain we visited The Garden of Eusebio Lopez Redondo near Fene, the Camellia exhibit in Ponte Vedra, and the park next to Pazo de Rubianes Pontevedra.
In 2018 i visited the Camellia exhibition in Naron (Spain), and there, all the private gardens, made available to the public for the occasion.
In 2019, together with Dr. Corneo, I went back to Portugal for the International Camellia Exhibition in Porto, and then we went on visiting Th Gardens of Villa D’Allen.
To this day my family’s estate and garden numbers more than 900 plants of Cultivar of Camellia japonica, such as the old Camellia from the Lucca area, the Tuscanian excellence, to the Cultivar from Lake Maggiore and Cultivar from France, Spain, Portugal and Belgium.
In our garden we also grow:
50 Camellia (reticulata and hybrids), 42 Camellia Higo, and 20 more species of Camellia.
